Topic: U.S. Strategic Interests & Alliances in the Middle East

Is the U.S. shifting its policies and actions to focus on future strategic interests and depending less on previous alliances in the Middle East? Has there been a shift away from the Cold War perspective of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”? Some issues to consider:

1) Yemen conflict/Iran-Saudi proxy war → Should the U.S. be involved or take a hands-off approach?

2) Israel-Palestine → Is the two-state solution possible now? 

3) Syria/Northern Iraq → What is the strategy to fight Daesh?
